Have you ever wondered why OTs always ask you “did your child crawl?”
The reason behind this is because it is an essential developmental stage. When a child misses this stage or is unable to complete it using a traditional crawl for example bottom shuffling instead, it often impacts on their future developmental skills. This is because crawling helps to develop and enhance our sensory systems, in particular our vestibular system. This means that it provides us with the opportunity to develop our joint stability, postural control, control of eye movements, bilateral coordination and also it enables us to integrate our reflexes.
