Back to school tips

It is not long now before our children are returning to school. School is very difficult at times for our young people with Sensory Processing challenges. These difficulties are increased when they return to school having to adjust to new classrooms, teachers, uniforms, shoes and possibly new schools.

Over the next few weeks anxiety is likely to increase significantly, offering opportunities for regular ‘heavy work’ will support your children to feel calmer. ‘Heavy work activities are those which involve heavy muscle work. The proprioceptive system is activated any time that we push or pull on objects as well as any time our joints are compressed together or stretched apart. This has a calming and organising effect on the body.

Examples include:

Walking the dog on a lead

Carrying heavy shopping bags

Chewing resistive foods such as dried fruit)

Wall pushups
